GEOLOGY

The predominant rock formation in the area is Nowra Sandstone. Its main characteristic is layers of stones and pebbles. Nowra sandstone is part of a Permian rock sequence, ie 270-230 million years old. It was created in a depression called the Sydney Basin into which melting glaciers and rivers carried sediment containing mud, sand, small rocks and pebbles. The resulting sandstone was elevated 600 metres about 100 million years ago and was quickly eroded by the Shoalhaven River and small streams. The rock contains many marine fossils in the lower layers.
