Until the 1930s creative expression in Australia had been dominated by art concerned with landscape. Abstraction, which was emerging in Europe and America, did not yet have a firm foothold. In the years surrounding the war the urban environment, and the impact of the war on the social fabric, became legitimate subject matter.
