1 March –8 June 2025
These learning experiences are informed by the Thinking together: Exchanges with the natural world museum season and are connected to the ideas, themes and material practices of the artists and artworks in this exhibition.
Museum Season Learning Activities:
Spark Ideas (1 hour)
Learners explore and respond to artworks on display in the Art Museum. Consideration is given to the work of contemporary artists Robert Andrew, Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan and Keg de Souza, presented alongside paintings by the Martu communities of central Western Australia, and video works by Sorawit Sangsataya and Tina Stefanou. This exhibition explores themes of reciprocity and collaboration between human and non-human and will inform and inspire learners about their own art making in the connected suite of learning experiences.
Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan (2 hours)
Learners respond directly to prompts created by Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan’s and experience art making beyond the self, exploring the concept of “habitation” as inclusive of humans and all living things. Cardboard sourced from local recycling centres is reused to make objects responding to the prompt “Habitation | A better place”. Drawings of the “tree of your imagination” are made using water-soluble graphite. Drawings and objects created during this workshop can be left at the Art Museum to be added to the Aquilizan’s collaborative installation in the Art Museum or may be taken home.
Pattern (3 hours)
Learners go outside to record patterns in the natural world then look to the human body for more. Patterns discerned in humans and the natural world are closely examined to find interdependencies and relationships. Individual and collaborative layered mark making using wax, ink and pastel leads to an individual artwork about patterns that is deconstructive, reconsidered and beyond the frame.
Connections (3 hours)
The purpose of this workshop is to experience the process of identifying an interesting idea related to themes in the Thinking Together exhibition and creating art that responds to this. Networks, cycles and systems involving relationships between nature and humans will be closely explored and discussed. From this, learners work individually or collaboratively using available media and mediums of their own choosing to generate an artwork that illustrates or comments on one of these human-nature relationships. The Bundanon learning team will provide flexible scaffolds and supports for this process to meet learner needs.
