PLAN YOUR VISIT - Explore themes of reciprocity and collaboration between the human and non-human with new exhibition 'Thinking together: Exchanges with the natural world'

Bundanon

This program develops the concept of artworks as a means of speaking up, inspired by contemporary textile artists from around the world such as Rebecca Mayo, Nadia Hernandez and Raquel Ormella whose work engages with social commentary and diverse perspectives on issues such as migration and the environment.

This program includes two activities that experiment with various techniques including eco-dyeing, printing, stitching and assemblage. The material developed from these activities then combined to make a finished artwork.

This program is only available as a two-night offering.

Activities for Speaking up

Spark Ideas (1 hour)

Learners explore and analyse artworks on display in the Art Museum. Consideration is given to the variety of artmaking practices, techniques utilised and colour, form and material themes evident. This art analysis will inform learners about their own artmaking in the connected suite of learning experiences.

Eco-dyeing (2 hours)

This activity involves the development of ideas and extends artmaking through textile practices of eco-dyeing. The development of ideas starts with creating poetic texts responding to this place and noting key ideas and words from this to share with an audience. Cotton fabric and/or paper are layered with natural dye plants and bound in bundles. Stencils, text shapes and cut outs are applied to the layers. The bundles are immersed in natural pigment dye pots creating pattern, colour and texture combinations.

Assemblage (3 hours)

Participants will experiment with text in the form of slogans, poetry and signs to incorporated into the process and act of making a flag, sculpture or other textile work. Layering text and natural objects using Gelli plate printing and stencils as well as stitching and embroidery builds layers onto the eco-dyed fabrics.

Building Out Books (3 hours)

Work into the paper from your eco-dye bundle with pen, gouache and other materials to present excerpts of your poetic text from the eco-dye workshop. Explore folding, scrolling and other techniques to make a ‘book’ of your text and artwork.
