Wendy Murray and Community | Spark A Reaction | Online Exhibition
"I remember one of the young artists said to me, “it’s so great that we all band together as a community after a disaster, why don’t we band together as a community before.” - Wendy Murray, 2020
Spark A Reaction is a collaborative exhibition of posters by NSW South Coast community & Wendy Murray. The series of poster making workshops were held in Nowra in September 2020. The artists experimented with poster making techniques and shared stories about the previous summer’s fires along the South Coast. Drawing inspiration from the handmade signs made during the last fire season - when communities messaged one another, the RFS and political leaders in public spaces – the artists sparked this series of quick response posters. The Nowra poster workshops provided community members with the opportunity to reflect upon the fires of 2019/20, their impact and how we might respond in the future, and inspired Murray to create a new series of posters, some of which are included in Spark A Reaction in the Homestead.
Wendy Murray is a visual artist and arts educator, originally from New Zealand. After winning the green card lottery Murray now lives and works between Los Angeles and Sydney.
Murray’s work is informed by her knowledge of street art and graffiti, making posters and public art that addresses current social and political issues. She often works in collaboration with community through workshops where she can share her skills and collaborate with a wide cross-section of the public. Wendy’s work is held in many major state and national collections throughout Australia and the US.
