bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country

Join us for a full weekend of free events in celebration of the opening of Bundanon’s new exhibition bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country.

A celebration of this place and local traditions, join in the opening festivities of this significant exhibition with talks, artmaking and weaving workshops, and special performances from leading First Nations musician Alice Skye, and intergenerational Yuin choir Djinama Yilaga.

bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country is a creative collaboration between Gweagal/Wandiwandian storyteller and artist Aunty Julie Freeman, leading Walbunja/Ngarigo artist Aunty Cheryl Davison, and Wiradyuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones.

Admission to the Art Museum is free all weekend. Supported by Sydney Festival.

 


 

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER

10am – 6pm | Art Museum open
The Art Museum will open to the public from 10am and close late at 6pm.

From 10am | DJ – Naian
Enjoy a curated soundtrack from First Nations DJ Naian spinning throughout the day.

10am – 5pm | Drop-in artmaking
Artmaking for all ages with Megalo Print Studio and Bundanon’s Learning Team.

10.30am – 11.30am | Weaving Workshop
Learn traditional weaving with Uncle Steven Russell to make a piece of jewellery.

11.30am | Welcome & Official Opening
Welcome to Country and opening speeches.

Experience a performance by South Coast First Nations choir Djinama Yilaga.

1.30pm – 2pm | Biddi-gal noon-kan-leek (Grandmothers belonging to me) 
Talk with Aunty Julie Freeman.

1.30pm – 2.30pm | Weaving Workshop
Learn traditional weaving with Uncle Steven Russell to make a piece of jewellery.

Learn to sing in Dhurga language with performers from the Djinama Yilaga choir.

Join Sophie O’Brien (Head of Curatorial & Learning) for a curator talk in Bundanon’s new Collection Gallery.

2.30pm – 3.15pm | Meeting Mickey of Ulladulla
Carol Cooper & Jonathan Jones discuss the work of Mickey of Ulladulla.

bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country is a body of works by renowned Gweagal/Wandiwandian storyteller and artist Aunty Julie Freeman, leading Walbunja/Ngarigo artist Aunty Cheryl Davison, and Wiradyuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones.

The season upholds and maintains Aboriginal values and kinships, featuring an immersive gunyah (home) installation including drawings by the significant Yuin artist Mickey of Ulladulla, a solo exhibition of paintings by Aunty Julie sharing grandmother stories of local plants, animals and weather patterns, and a new installation by Aunty Cheryl Davison, representing the importance of Burrawang seeds, a key traditional food source.
