Artmaking at the Homestead

Learn age-old textile dyeing techniques as with artist and researcher Joanna Fowles

Workshop

Saturday 23 January 10am–12.30pm
Book

Joanna will guide you through the process of hand painting and dyeing with iron and local plant tannins to discover their creative applications on cloth. With her guidance, participants will learn how land and place can inspire gestural textile design.

Joanna Fowles is an Illawarra-based artist and researcher working with natural dyeing and mordant printing. Using locally foraged plant materials, her practice explores colour as a record of place, season and material change. Her practice spans geometric textile works, site-specific installations and participatory public projects.

Recent exhibitions include Floras Localis: Colour + Place (Australian Tapestry Workshop, Melbourne Design Week, 2026), Second Look: Chromatic Care (Australian Design Centre, 2025) and Travelling Colour (Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design, 2024).

Fowles holds a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from UNSW and First-Class Honours in Textiles from Chelsea College of Arts, London.
