A centre for reflection, creation, and experimentation.
Open to applicants from all disciplines and stages of career, the residencies are highly sought after by artists nationally and internationally. Bundanon has new partnerships with the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation and the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia, NSW, supporting two new residencies for Australian artists.
Bundanon’s multi-disciplinary residency program is the largest in Australia, offering a unique location in which artists can conceive and develop new work and ideas, notes Sophie O’Brien, Head of Curatorial and Learning. It’s something of an oasis. A time and space where artists of all kinds can reflect, create and experiment, situated in a wildlife reserve beside the Shoalhaven River on beautiful Wodi Wodi country. Numerous artists will tell you about their Bundanon story, and the ways in which it offered a bubble of time to create an important work. This program fulfils Arthur Boyd’s vision for Bundanon: that it inspires creativity in everyone.
Bundanon is in the process of transforming. With a new contemporary art museum opening later in the year, along with additional creative learning spaces, accommodation and café, the Artist in Residence program will retain its place at the heart of what Bundanon does. Supporting contemporary arts practice was central to Arthur and Yvonne Boyd’s plans when they gifted the Bundanon property to the Australian people. This vision has seen Bundanon establish itself as an engine room for contemporary art practice in Australia, with purpose-built studios and rehearsal spaces suitable for artists of all disciplines.
Applications are open to creatives from all genres, closing May 31, 2021. Around 350 people per year spend time in residence at Bundanon working alone or with a group. Past alumni include Bhenji Ra, Justin Shoulder, Meryl Tankard, Ben Quilty, Katie Noonan, Charlotte Wood, Christina Chan, Brook Andrew, Wesley Enoch, William Zappa and Sue Broadway, as well as companies such as Playwriting Australia, Moogahlin Performing Arts, Curious Works, TaikOz, Critical Path and the Song Company.
