Andrew Lang

Art Forms: Composition, Music/Sound, Sound Art

Residency Year: 2023

Lives / Works: Adelaide, Kaurna

Andrew (he/him) is a composer & noisemaker living on Kaurna land who has worked across a variety of solo and collaborative media projects.

Taking elements from drone and contemporary classical music, his work blends acoustic and electronic instrumentation, field recordings, tape, found sounds, and live reamplification, often heavily processed beyond recognition to draw out unusual and unfamiliar characteristics and explore the psychospatial and illusory nature of sound.

In addition to several solo releases – Frailty (forthcoming), Momentary Senses (2020), Burnt Shades (2016) – Andrew has also composed works for films and video games.

In Residence at Bundanon

Andrew’s residency will focus on a new longform recorded work aimed at inverting his practice into a “composition in environment” approach, focusing on interrogating the boundaries between composed and naturally occurring sound.

The proposed work will explore “field performances” – sound compositions and recordings produced through performance in outdoor spaces to create site-specific recorded works. Compositions will be created through a combination of electronic performance, processed environmental sounds, and playback of pre-recorded acoustic materials, to produce a hybrid of field recordings and composition that explores perspective and psychospatial phenomena.
