Sonya Lifschitz and Christine Johnston

Art Forms: Music/Sound, Performance

Residency Year: 2022

Lives / works: Bidjigal land, Sydney

Renowned for their exceptional artistry in their own genres, pianist and creative collaborator Sonya Lifschitz and vocalist/performer Christine Johnston (Madame Lark and one third of award winning The Kransky Sisters) partner up to create one of Australia’s most dynamic powerhouse duos. In their collaborations the worlds of classical music and performance art/comedy collide in performances that will take your breath away in their consummate musicianship, audacity and curious imagination. As Sonya unleashes sounds from inside and out of her piano, expect Johnston to unfurl a plethora of vocal and visual observations of the Antipodes.

In residence at Bundanon

Singer/musician/performance-maker Christine Johnston and pianist/musical maverick Sonya Lifschitz have collated life stories of six matriarchs who talk of their childhood dreams, their toys, surviving world wars, escaping being beheaded, moving continents, being nearly eaten by a wolf, and navigating mobile phones in their twilight years. Part theatre, part documentary, part concert, and part aural history, the Interview Project oscillates between the vintage and contemporary sound-visual aesthetics, this piece of “concert-theatre” will use captured recorded and remixed voices of the women speaking and singing, overlaid with live classical and contemporary classical piano, musical saw, cabaret and the modern technical world of electronica.
