Museum Season Learning Activities:
Spark Ideas (1 hour)
Explore and respond to artworks on display in the Art Museum to spark ideas for related artmaking workshops. Man on Fire: Visions of Nebuchadnezzar brings Arthur Boyd’s iconic work into dialogue with a significant new commission by leading Australian contemporary artist Shaun Gladwell.
Landscape, Action (2 hours)
Work collaboratively in small groups. Use dramatic play to create some ‘figure in a landscape’ scenes or actions. Individually, create some expressive drawings (or photographs) that show the actions and interactions of the figure and landscape.
Thinking Nebuchadnezzar (3 hours)
Consider how Boyd heightens the drama in his telling of the Nebuchadnezzar paintings. Activate your imagination; develop your own figurative acrylic painting, using setting and other elements (e.g., animals, lightning, fire) to heighten storytelling.
(Stories of) Transformation (3 hours)
Draw inspiration from Shaun Gladwell’s use of video and photography to create a story board of 5 scenes that show a moment of transformation.
