DiscoverOliver John Cameron is a composer whose work merges pop and music theatre aesthetics with contemporary classical forms.
His practice centres on collaboration, text, and storytelling, and is reflected in emotionally resonant music that moves fluidly across genres, from intimate song cycles to large-scale choral and staged works.
His music has been commissioned and performed by leading Australian ensembles and festivals, including Moorambilla Voices, the Australian Vocal Ensemble, the Biennale of Sydney and Sydney Festival, where his and Vic Zerbt’s musical CONVERTED! premiered in 2025. Recent highlights include Breathwork, premiered by Omega Ensemble at the Sydney Opera House, and After the Shipwreck, a song cycle EP created with Gamilaroi poet Luke Patterson and released on ABC Classic. He is a casual academic at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Director of Polyphony Choir in Sydney’s Inner West.
During my residency at Bundanon, I’ll be developing my chamber opera M.TH.R, expanding it into a longer work. I’m looking forward to having time to do a lot of reading to help shape and deepen the piece.
I’ll also be using this as a chance to improvise at the piano and find new seeds of ideas. Singing is a big part of how I discover material, so it will be great to have the quiet surrounds to explore this more freely (and not annoy my neighbours).
