Art Forms: Research, Visual Art, Writing

Residency Year: 2026

Lives / Works: Naarm / Melbourne

Rowan McNaught is an artist-researcher based in Melbourne, where he is secretary of Darpa, under whose auspices he attends this residency.

In Residence at Bundanon

I will be researching, writing, and editing an issue of the poetry journal OEI about the work of C. K. Bliss, who worked for decades, first in Shanghai and then in Coogee, on a comprehensive artificial language of little picture symbols. Long considered an amateur and a crank, my work will reconsider his language through a form of domain confusion, and for the first time insist that it is an underappreciated work of Australian avant-garde visual poetry and correspondence art.
