Read MoreSonia van de Haar (Lymesmith), Jo Breneger (Indigo Jo), and Leia Sidery (The Art of Wall) are practicing artists specialising in large-scale mural commissions.
Leia and Jo have collaborated for 10 years, primarily working with First Nations artists to interpret their works into public art installations. Recently, they partnered with Lymesmith to create the Arc Angel mural in Newtown and the seven-story, 440sqm mural Between Mountains in Canberra. Their collaborative experience has been both joyful and inspiring. Mural painting is demanding work, and their combined 90+ years of experience has led them to explore alternative ways to harness their skills. This residency presents an opportunity to set new challenges and investigate the potential for a female-led mural practice.
We envisage using our Bundanon residency as a think tank – to discuss and develop possible models and a manifesto for a feminist mural painting collective. And to answer questions such as: What is possible for mural painting in the public domain? What could an expanded/collective mural practice look like? What does a feminist mural approach look like?
Whilst in residence at Bundanon we plan to use our time to imagine into and contemplate our use of colour and simplicity of design to create ambient, harmonious and rejuvenating spaces for community well-being. We plan to explore what our feminine sensibilities can offer to public space, storytelling of place.
