Lucie Cutting is a radio presenter and award-nominated features reporter, with a background in libraries and archives. In 2015 she co-founded an online platform called The Pin which was dedicated to conversations on race, culture and identity in Australia. The Pin is now available on Trove.
Zoe Kean is a multi-award-winning science writer with a focus on evolution, ecology, and the environment. Her debut evolutionary non-fiction Why Are We Like This? was published with NewSouth in 2024. Zoe also writes in short form and has been featured in The Best Australian Science Writing 2022, 2023 and 2024, and in 2025 she is co-edited the prestigious anthology with Tegan Taylor.
A shared highlight of theirs was breaking news story where the two pursued a scientific experiment to ascertain whether thylacines glow under a special type of light.
Journalists Zoe Kean and Lucie Cutting will work on the manuscript of a non-fiction title that looks behind headlines on the de-extinction of Australia’s iconic carnivorous marsupial, the thylacine, and the key players involved in its intended return. Their one-week residency is a timely and important opportunity to wholly focus on writing. In their home state of lutruwita/Tasmania the two are caregivers who rarely get to work without distraction, the environment and writers’ cottage at Bundanon will provide inspiration and much-needed space and time. Zoe and Lucie will also use their week at Bundanon to plan next steps for the project.
