Emerging Talent

Emerging Talent, an exhibition of photographs and prints highlighting the work of three artists who participated in the Bundanon Residency for Emerging Artists program in 2004 and 2005.

Emerging Talent, was an exhibition of photographs and prints highlighting the work of three artists who participated in the Bundanon Residency for Emerging Artists program in 2004 and 2005.

This exhibition represents a range of experiences and interpretations of the artists’ time at Bundanon. From the pure landscape photography of Nici Cumpston, and the quirky photographs of Madeleine Donovan to Rebecca Steven’s interest in the constructed environment culminating in an installation in the Bundanon bush.

Artists in residence are continually exploring the landscapes of Bundanon and Nici Cumpston took a particular interest in the linear trunks and the changing light in the Spotted Gum forest. She said ‘The images (of the forest) reflect the contemplative nature of my time at Bundanon’.

Madeleine Donovan is interested in the human body as a sculptural device within the landscape. Bundanon, including the Shoalhaven River, Arthur’s studio and the Homestead became the stage for a series of photographs in which Donovan and her balance partner Rachelle McConville performed.

Staircases, walkways, ladders and platforms expressing progress, ambition and movement have been a recurring motif in Rebecca Stevens work and are represented in this exhibition by set of prints. Reworking of this theme in the new environment of Bundanon led to the construction of a life size cardboard staircase which was documented in various environments including the Bundanon bush.

Arthur and Yvonne Boyd had a vision of a living arts centre where artists from all disciplines and stages in their career could share and draw inspiration from the Shoalhaven landscape and Bundanon. In honour of the Boyd’s vision an Artist in Residence Program commenced soon after the Bundanon Trust was established in 1993.

In 2004 a new category was introduced to the Artist in Residence program, the Bundanon Residency for Emerging Artists, which offers residencies to a select group of the finest emerging talent graduating from Honours and Masters courses in Australia’s leading art schools. It provides a rare opportunity for graduates to spend time at Bundanon and to be inspired by the unique environment that has influenced many Australian and international artists. A residency at Bundanon provides the opportunity for artists to work without the interruptions of ‘home’ commitments and enables them to be immersed in the creative atmosphere that is Bundanon.

Arthur Boyd’s vision continues to live on at Bundanon as a new generation of artists participating in the Bundanon Artist in Residence Program are inspired by their time at Bundanon.
