DiscoverCaroline is a dance artist and speech pathologist based in Naarm/Melbourne.
Her work privileges dance as a formal medium, while folding in theatre and text elements. Past works have embraced a pluralistic ethos – incorporating multiple references and forms within dissonant, collage-like structures. These works integrate text and dance without defaulting to a dance-theatre sensibility, but rather, referencing and disrupting theatre conventions and devices (narrative, gesture, exposition) through the application of choreographic logics and structures to disperse meaning. Caroline has created works as part of Alice Will Caroline (with Alice Dixon and William McBride) as well as solo- authored pieces. She has also performed in work by artists including Phillip Adams Balletlab, Michelle Heaven, Shelley Lasica, Sandra Parker, Monica Bill Barnes and others. Her work has been presented at Dance Massive, Next Wave, Festival of Live Art, Melbourne Fringe, Keir Choreographic Award Commission, MEL&NYC Festival, Union House Theatre and Abbotsford Convent.
At Bundanon I will continue developing Bear, a new solo work of dance. Bear is a rigorous choreographic undertaking of rhythmic specificity, stillness, and expanding and contracting timescapes. Formal contours of suspension and fragmentation evoke a sense of stasis or loss and hint at a psychological terrain – tangible, but not legible. For this residency I will collaborate with dramaturg and writer William McBride and experiment with my drawing and painting practice to create an artwork-adjacent artefact – a storybook of sorts that proposes an alternative meaning-making exercise and casts the ambiguity and density of the dance into relief.
