DiscoverGareth Jenkins is a poet, installation artist and publisher based in Sydney, Gadigal Country
His first poetry collection Recipes for the Disaster won the Anne Elder Award, and in 2023 published his second book, The Inclination Compass, a multimedia poetic narrative, a ‘Perec-ish chimera’ a ’21st Century epic poem’ and a ‘visionary fever dream’ that explores the ‘secret motivations of language’. In 2020 he founded the archive and small press Apothecary Archive, specialising in poetic books and archiving creative projects.
He creates immersive art installations involve poetic sound compositions, electronics, video, UV-light, and sculptural assemblages. With collaborator Kathryn Cowen, they were finalist in the 2022 North Sydney Art Prize, feature artists at Cementa24, created Serendipia, at Yarrila Arts and Museum (2024), and in 2027 will create a new interactive sculptural work, `The Chronoportation Device’ at Maitland Regional Gallery.
I’ll be working on two interrelated projects during my residency. I’ll be shaping and editing the manuscript of my next book, another multimedia poetic narrative, tentatively titled, those that saw the transmission.
I’ll also be adapting sections of this text for improvised sound performance. These sound experiments will incorporate local field recordings, voice and sounds generated by found objects and assemblages.
I’m looking forward to walking the landscape, keenly listening as I go.
