Read MoreGrace Chapple is a playwright and screenwriter based on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia. Grace’s debut play, Never Closer, received a sold-out and critically acclaimed run at Belvoir Street Theatre in the company’s 2024 season. Never Closer was originally produced as part of Belvoir’s 25A independent program in 2022, for which it received an AWGIE nomination for Best Stage Play (Original), before being remounted in the theatre’s mainstage season. Never Closer has also been shortlisted for the Griffin Award, the Rodney Seaborn Award, the Shane & Catherine Brennan Playwriting Award, and longlisted for Theatre503’s International Playwriting Award. Grace is currently a resident artist at Sydney Theatre Company, and an alumna of ATYP’s National Studio and of AWG’s First Break screenwriting program. She is writing a new theatre commission for Belvoir St, and developing her own projects for screen.
During my time at Bundanon I will be working towards completing a first draft of my new play ‘The Wolf at the Door.’ The play will explore rising the social tensions caused by the housing crisis through the relationship between a father and a son who are forced to live together when the son loses his job. It’s a dark comedy that veers into tragedy, fuelled by intergenerational conflict between the born-on-times and the born-too-lates. I’m looking forward to spending the week knee-deep in uninterrupted writing sessions, on experimentation with new scenes and characters, enjoying stimulating walks in nature, and in communion with other artists.
