Michael Atherton is a composer and performer with experience in music for the concert hall, film, television and radio. Atherton has made numerous recordings, documentary film scores and television themes. His awards include a Centenary Medal (2003) for service to the community, and a high commendation for research training and supervision in the VCs Awards for Excellence (2008). He retired from the University of Western Sydney at the end of 2012 and was honoured with the title, Emeritus Professor.

Atherton was in residence at Bundanon in 2015 with Paul Koerbin. During their residency they collaborated on their project ‘Reflecting Dark’. The project was inspired by the landscape and night soundscapes of Bundanon itself.

Bundanon acknowledges the people of the Dharawal and Dhurga language groups as the traditional owners of the land within our boundaries, and recognises their continuous connection to culture, community and Country.

In Dharawal the word Bundanon means deep valley.
