Live and breathe Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon with this immersive overnight weekend experience.

Bundanon was Arthur Boyd’s home for much of his life, and the surrounding Shoalhaven landscape was the leading character in most of the work he produced here.

Coinciding with the current exhibition, Wilder Times: Arthur Boyd and the mid-1980s Landscape, this special weekend will give guests a deeper insight into Boyd’s practice and the landscape that inspired him.

Picnic talk at the Homestead

Your weekend begins at the heritage Homestead, the historic sandstone home of Arthur and Yvonne Boyd. Guests will be welcomed with a picnic lunch and in-conversation between Bundanon’s Collection Manager and a special guest friend and colleague of Arthur Boyd, followed by a tour of the heritage Homestead and Arthur Boyd’s studio.

Step through time with a visit to the historic Homestead and enjoy a window into the Boyds’ life at Bundanon. With displays from the Bundanon Collection, sculpture gardens and Arthur Boyd’s artist studio preserved as it was during his time there, there’s always new stories to discover at the Homestead.

Jennifer Thompson

Jennifer Thompson is the Collections Manager for Bundanon, where she has worked for over 20 years. Her work includes managing the Collection and Archive, conducting and facilitating research, developing and touring exhibitions, caring for the heritage precincts and providing physical and online access to the Collections. 

Prior to working at Bundanon Jennifer worked at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney; in arts education at University of NSW and at community centres with adults and children. She also ran her own visual arts studio in Newtown, Sydney, for many years. 

Jennifer has an MA in Museums Studies, Grad Dip in Design Studies, and a BA in Visual Art.

 

Special Guest

Our special guest was a close friend and colleague of Arthur and Yvonne Boyd. They will share personal stories about their time with Arthur and the enormous influence he had on the arts in Australia in the twentieth century, and beyond.

Bushwalk & Workshop

Treelines Track Bushwalk

Conceived by artist Janet Laurence, walk the Treelines Track with a local ecologist and learn about Bundanon’s floral history and the natural bush that sits between the farmland and Homestead Garden.

The Treelines Track is a linear arboretum traces the history of plants and plantings across the Bundanon landscape.

Landscape Painting Workshop

River and bushland views are the inspiration for an acrylic landscape painting. Participants develop a personal approach to landscape painting, developing skills in colour mixing and limited palettes, while considering the act of painting outdoors. Participants explore ways of recording this experience of the landscape through movement, sound, film and other artforms.

No experience required.

In the late afternoon you will have a guided tour of the latest Art Museum exhibition, Wilder Times, featuring a series of Boyd’s Shoalhaven landscape paintings commissioned by the Arts Centre Melbourne in 1984.

Wilder Times: Arthur Boyd and the mid-1980s landscape sees the return of a series of Shoalhaven landscape paintings by Arthur Boyd to Bundanon for the first time since their creation in 1984, bringing them into conversation with over 60 works by seminal Australian artists from the mid-1980s

Executive Chef Douglas Innes-Will oversees all catering at Bundanon and the Ramox Café, bringing his local eye and longstanding knowledge of South Coast produce.

Douglas works with local purveyors to source sustainable ingredients for signature dishes and to ensure quality produce is sourced from the surrounding Shoalhaven region.

The Bridge

Stay overnight in Bundanon’s award-winning eco-friendly accommodation in The Bridge.

The Bridge

Sensitively embracing the existing landscape and its ecology, The Bridge is a 160-metre-long by 9-metre-wide structure that spans the space of a gully. Designed to respond to current and future climatic conditions, Kerstin Thompson drew inspiration from rural Australia’s trestle flood bridges.

On select weekends throughout the year visitors to Bundanon have the opportunity to stay the night on The Bridge and experience Kerstin Thompson’s architecture for themselves.

Join local practitioners Chelsea Mazzini and Rachelle Munro for a mindful breathwork class.

Breathwork is a unique full-body and sensory experience that involves breathing practices in which the conscious control of breathing can have a therapeutic effect on the mind. Guests will be guided by expert practitioners. No experience is required

Talk in the Art Museum

Leading Australian art historian and critic, Professor Terry Smith, will discuss the importance of Arthur Boyd’s work in the mid 1980s, and its influence on writers at the time

Professor Terry Smith

Terry Smith is Emeritus Professor of Art History at The University of Sydney, and Andrew W. Mellon Emeritus Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at The University of Pittsburgh.

A founding Board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, he served on the board of the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, and is Board Member Emeritus of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Biennial Foundation, New York.

Australian cellist Richard Narroway enjoys an international career as a performer, recording artist, and teacher. He has given performances across Australia, North America, Europe, and Asia, in prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center, Chicago Symphony Center, Koerner Hall, and the Sydney Opera House.

Towels, bedding and body wash are provided. Please bring anything else you might need including:

  • Other toiletries: shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste
  • Warm clothes, a hat and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Water bottle
  • For light-sensitive sleepers: some light does enter the rooms in the Bridge which have perforated blinds. If you are staying in the Boyd Education Centre there are no blinds on the windows, so bring an eye mask
  • Hair dryer/shower cap, if you need one
  • A good book: there are no TVs at Bundanon, so bring things to do during any downtime

Your stay at Bundanon enables two children from local primary schools to participate in a day learning program at Bundanon.

Includes accommodation, pre-dinner canapes, 2 course dinner & drinks, continental breakfast, Tim Ross talk, experimental concert in the Art Museum, guided bushwalk and Museum & Homestead entry.
