Transmit 2015

Artists Candy Royalle, Peta Strachan (NAISDA), William Barton and local dancer Joe Brown McLeod will be working with local Aboriginal school students to develop and present a performance of dance, didgeridoo and rap/poetry.

Workshops for 2015’s TRANSMIT performance are underway. Hear directly from the students on how things are going.

Shoalhaven High School student James

I have really enjoyed being involved in Transmit Project so far. It has really helped build my confidence by working with other indigenous students and doing something I love.

I think doing the public performance will help me become more confident getting up in front of people. Like, I find doing speeches in my English class hard but after doing this, it’ll be easier for me.

Thanks for giving me this opportunity.

Ulladulla High student Alex

To dance is to dream and to dream spiritually is to live. Spiritually Ulladulla High School is beginning an aboriginal dance routine for young females of indigenous and non – indigenous background called Transmit. Meeting with the three teachers of the Bundanon Trust on the 30th of July gave us a sample for the routines to come and the understanding of our culture through dance. We began with the easy movements to clap sticks that warmed us up for the next arrangement. The simplest movements seemed harder to complete and made us giggle at times. We began to learn a Torres Strait islander dance which as a group came to be in sync with one another. The use of the floor, the sway of our arms and the step sounds of our feet were tiring at times but the second dance kept us going at a pace where we learnt the steps to carrying and transporting water. It required timing and little movements which were harder to hold but made the difference to the appearance. Soar limbs, aching muscles and bruised knees were the result of one practice as we are to continue each Thursday with the Bundanon teachers and get our indigenous dancing spirituality and respectfully perfect for the future event of performing at the Shoalhaven entertainment centre.

Ulladulla High student Matilda

My first session of the Transmit rap/poetry workshop was a really great start. It helped me to take my poetry to the next level, with so many useful tips. It also gave me the opportunity to perform in front of a group and I can’t wait till next week.

Bomaderry High student Morgan

Candy and Regina came into Bomaderry High School on Tuesday to teach us how to rap. Candy had taught us how to rap in 20 minutes and in one and a half hours we had made a rap about family and love.

We had joined all of our raps together and created a chorus. Candy said that the two key things in a rap is rhythm and rhyme. All the Koori kids that participated had a deadly time and enjoyed the TRANSMIT program.

Vincentia High student Ruben

Hey Guys It’s a Transmit Blogger here and I’m going to tell you about Transmit. It’s a programme for Aboriginal kids, it involves learning about your culture and others you also learn new dances and it’s not all serious and strict. You’re allowed to have fun but also have to responsible and also listen to each other.

Last week we introduced ourselves to Aunty Justine, Uncle David, Ms Regina And Uncle Joe. We had so much fun and we met new friends and can discus ideas with each other. They also teach you about bush tucker and other incredible things like learning about each other’s’ culture.

One of the dances we learnt are Berry Picking and we also sung an Aboriginal Prey song. I think the process of Transmit is going to turn out great and we always have fun. We are all looking forward to dancing at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre and meeting other schools and making other friends.

Transmit is completely different to our normal dance and didj. We have to stretch before we dance, we are split up into boy and girl groups. The dance and didj group are going to practice every day of the holidays.
