Art Form: Writing

Residency Year: 2026

Lives / Works: Djugerari, Walmajarri Country, WA

Helena is a creative writer with Dutch heritage and currently lives on Walmajarri Country in the Kimberley, WA.

Through her work as a writer of creative nonfiction, fiction, and song lyrics, Helena likes to tell stories that illuminate the multifaceted lives of people in regional and remote Australia, stories that don’t often get heard. She has received two Australian Society of Authors’ Mentorships, residencies at Varuna, Bundanon and The Gunyah, and funding from Create NSW, Regional Arts NSW, Arts North West & Orana Arts. In 2024, Helena was one of ten writers selected for the Faber Academy’s Online ‘Writing a Novel’ course with Carrie Tiffany. Her memoir, ‘Wild Boys’, was published by UQP.

In Residence at Bundanon

At Bundanon, I will develop ‘Finger Lime Pickles & Imaginary Canoes’, an autobiographical novel that explores the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationships and war damage in families.
