Martin Hansen

Art Form: Performance

Residency Year: 2026

Lives / Works: Naarm, Melbourne

Martin Hansen is an Australian choreographer and artist working primarily in theatre and gallery contexts.

Throughout their body of work, archives in the form of photography, film, video and GIF collections are used to critically explore memory and time, with ghosts recurring as generative figures upon which works are built. Martin works with friends and colleagues as a dancer, choreographer, thinker and co-conspirator. Martins latest work ‘Frankie’ explores grief through the figure and cultural imagination of the ‘monster’.

Since 2015, Martin’s solos and group works have been presented at venues and festivals such as Tanzfabrik, Tanznacht, Sophiensaele, Radialsystem and Bärenzwinger (Berlin), PACT Zollverein (Essen), Rencontre Chorégraphique Internationales De Seine Saint Denis (Paris), Charleroi Danse and KANAL Centre Pompidou (Brussels), Hong Kong Arts Festival (Hong Kong), Dance Massive, Dancehouse, Frame Biennial (Melbourne), Aerowaves (Aarhus), and Carriageworks (Sydney).

In Residence at Bundanon

During my residency at Bundanon I will be working on a series of performative materials that deal with grief as bodily injury, utterance and lullaby as choreography and lecture and grammar as dance. These modalities will produce dances of movement, tune and discourse that use each form to test how choreographic thinking can move in and around the dancing body, but also other materials as well, to become the way of forming relations between a wide variety of materials.
