Zela Papageorgiou

Art Forms: Composition, Performance, Sound Art

Residency Year: 2024

Lives / Works: Melbourne, Naarm

Zela Papageorgiou is a Naarm (Melbourne) based percussionist, creating and performing contemporary-classical, experimental and improvised music.

She collaborates regularly with leading organisations such as Speak Percussion, Play On, Ad Lib Collective, and is the core percussionist for Forest Collective. Zela’s passion for collaborative and interdisciplinary music-making extends to her work in music education and engagement through the facilitation of workshops and education programs. She received her Bachelor of Music Performance with Honours at the University of Melbourne and attended the Australian National Academy of Music.

In Residence at Budanon

Zela’s project during her residency is the development of compositional material for electroacoustic percussion, exploring intersections between organic and synthetic sound sources. Her work will include experimentations with electroacoustic techniques to create sound worlds which appear both familiar and otherworldly to the listener, much like a dream. Inspired by the natural landscape surrounding Bundanon, Zela’s compositional approaches will include evoking soundscapes reminiscent of specific environments, pairing live performance with field recordings and creating percussion instrumentations that incorporate natural materials.
