Anthony Bautovich

Art Form: Composition

Residency Year: 2023

Lives / Works: Sydney, Gadigal Country

Singer/songwriter Anthony Bautovich lives and works in Redfern. His home and music studio, located in a terrace house, also doubles as an art gallery.

Home@735 Gallery was established in 2013 with his late partner, Madeleine Preston. The gallery has exhibited hundreds of local, interstate and International artists over an eleven-year period.

Bautovich started playing in bands during the heyday of Sydney’s live music scene in the late ‘70s. His first band, The Lonelyhearts, played hundreds of gigs and recorded a string of singles during the eighties with a self-titled album released by Melbourne label Buttercup Records in 2017.

Working alongside musical legends including Jim Dickinson, Spooner Oldham and Big Star’s Jody Stephens, Bautovich co-wrote and co-produced two albums with the Orange Humble Band recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis.

During his residency, Anthony will be working on new material for the third album with his band, the Forresters.

In Residence at Bundanon

I spent some time at Bundanon in early 2022, not as an artist, but as a carer. My partner Madeleine Preston was awarded a residency during February. Madeleine was dealing with terminal cancer and would not have been able to take part without assistance. She passed away one month after her residency.

The songs I will be working on during my residency, will recount my lived experience. A record of dark overtones, it will be an exploration of emotion; not only as a personal account, but a relatable narrative for those who have experienced personal loss and grief.
